Nancy Frances Hackett, Limerick Academy, York County, Maine, 1836

This outstanding 1836 sampler descended in one of the more important and historic Kennebunk/Kennebunkport families . . . the Hackett-Thompson-Lord Family.   Samplermaker Nancy Frances Hackett worked her sampler at 10 years of age while attending the Limerick Academy in York County, Maine.  Her father was the prominent early 1800's Master Mariner, William Hackett and her mother was Lydia Dutch.  She married into the equally prominent Thompson family, marrying Nathaniel Lord Thompson, son of the well known Kennebunk sea captain, Nathaniel Thompson Sr. and his wife, Elizabeth.  They had three children.

Nathaniel Thompson Jr, the husband of our samplermaker had 2 brothers who were equally significant mariners and part of the Thompson seafaring dynasty.  There are extensive and historic family papers in the BRICK STORE MUSEUM in Kennebunk, Maine along with the diary of our samplermaker, Nancy.

Nancy's large sampler (20" x 20") is in excellent condition with good color and contrast.  It is conserved into a molded frame with old wavy glass.  A file of family information accompanies this historically important sampler which is quite intricate,  having a triple border that includes 2 delicate sawtooth surrounds using a variety of stitches. It contains the following New England schoolgirl verse that reads:

Let modesty that Heaven born maid
Your words and actions grace
Tis this this only that can add,
True lustre to your face.
