Quail Bird Carving by Enoch Benner c. 1900


 

 Presented here, a very fine Quail Bird Carving by Enoch Benner of Port Clyde, Maine, c. 1900. Benner was a well known carver from Port Clyde which is one of the settlements that comprise St. George in Knox County. He was born in 1834 and died in 1904 and is listed in the 1880 Census as a fisherman.

This, from an important grouping of over 30 Carved and Painted Folk Art Birds which included Owls, Songbirds and Seafowl recently disbursed at auction. The little quail stands 5 inches tall, including the base. The carvings were found in the attic of the generational Cook home (Cousins of Benner) in Port Clyde. These carvings are superb examples of Maine Folk Art.
