Scrimshaw Seam Rubber
This exquisitely hand carved Seam Rubber is a fine example of work done by scrimshanders. Undoubtedly made by a sail maker on board a whaling vessel for his own use. Made of a single piece of whalebone with a polyhedron carved knob. In working with heavy canvas the folds were flattened by rubbing under considerable pressure to create a controllable line to stitch either a fold or two pieces together. The precision and artistry in this tool are both exceptional, making this seam rubber a true treasure. $1500.00 P10J31397 Questions? Ask the Ferret!
