Abigail Graham, Buckland, Franklin, Massachusetts, 1810

Abigail was born to Zenas Graham and Abigail (Taylor) on February 10, 1800 in Buckland, Massachusetts, the second of twelve children born to the couple. Buckland is located in northwestern Massachusetts on the "Mohawk Trail" which was a main artery for those seeking "space" and acreage away from the "city" areas around Boston.

Abigail married Ira Barnard on October 22, 1840. She was his third wife and though it does not appear that they had any children, I'm sure Abigail was kept busy caring for the children of her husband's previous marriages.

Abigail's sampler, with alphabets and verse as well as pictorial elements is very simple and sweet. The verse reads:
Lovely indeed the mimic works of art;
But natures works far lovelier.
Imitative strokes can do no more
Than please the eye----sweet nature every sense

This sampler has a very carefree feel to it . . . being not mirror image and structured. The House, the Trees and the Basket of Flowers which is larger than the house is to be admired. This sampler has been conservation mounted into a painted frame and protected with Tru-Vue glass for future generations.
Sight Size is 11-1/2" x 17"
