Painted Silhouette of a Handsome Gentleman

It is not often one acquires a completely painted silhouette as the hollow-cut and the cut-and paste varieties are more common. This silhouette is not only of a handsome man, but is handsomely executed. Notice the wonderful hair detail . . . so delicate. The cravat and the coat details are very clear. The features are well chiseled, even to the upturned nose, and the total effect is outstanding. The proportions are excellent and a fine painterly quality is evident throughout. A fine silhouette of this type has artistic merit comparable to a good painting. The areas that appear darker at the bottom is pencil embelishment to the background.

The silhouette is in excellent condition and the papier mache frame with brass acorn finial appears to be original to the silhouette, c. 1810-1820. The size is 4-1/8" w. x 5-1/8" h.
