Canton Mug This is a wonderful Chinese Export Blue Canton Mug decorated in the classic Canton underglaze blue on a white porcelain ground. The design incorporates a Chinese Pagoda, a willow tree, a boat, and an island in the distance with another building. The Mug measures 4 1/8" in height and the diameter of the top opening is 3 1/2 ". It has a double strapped entwined handle that ends with molded floral sprays. The condition is excellent, the color vibrant, and brushstrokes are nice and crisp. Circa 1830.
What I find interesting about this mug is the pagoda on the far right, closest to the handle. Usually we find someone seated in the window. . . in this instance it is empty! Not sure if this was deliberate or the artist just forgot. Also, the "rain" in the rain-and-cloud border is from left to right instead of right to left. F06E17055 Questions? Ask the Ferret!
