Paint Decorated Document Box
Presented here, a wonderful freehand Painted Decorated Document Box in Marine Blue Paint.  The top is decorated with bunches of grapes and cherries as well as an intricate line border in red, yellow and light green.  It is signed on the top A. L. Dawes, presumably the owner of the box.  Square nailed construction . . . hand cut screws. The box retains most all of it's original paint with the slightest bit of wear on the top edge due to age and usage.  At some point the box was varnished which accounts for the slightly greenish cast you see.  Most of this has been cleaned down on the sides leaving a dry marine blue paint.  The top as not been cleaned down as far so as not to damage the painting.  Circa 1825-40
The condition is excellent and the size is 13-1/2" long x 6-1/2" high x 8" deep.
