Mason's Challenge Blacking

Presented here, a very nice example of this late 19th century Philadelphia shoe blacking advertisement item. It would also fit into the Black Americana category.

A display box for packages of 3 dozen #1 Mason's Blacking, this wooden display box measures 10.5" wide 8.25" deep and 2.75" high.

A stereotypical image of a happy black African-American polishing a very large oversized boot while a dog on the Litho cover is startled by his reflection in the boot. In the background, an aristocratic carriage drives down the street in front of fine public buildings. Hinged lid has large chromolithographed inner color label which is quite vivid with only tiny areas of loss on the edges. The box is certainly in nicer condition than typically found. Ex Debbie Lawson Estate.
