Early Oval Shaker Box
Shaker Oval Boxes, as with many other products adapted by the Shakers, were better made and more carefully finished than those produced elseware. The wood was properly seasoned and the covers fit perfectly. These wooden boxes were manufactured for a longer period than any other product made in the Shaker communities, both for their own use and for sale to the "world". It is still the one Shaker item most in demand by collectors and the one that is most popularly associated with the Shaker sect.

This classic little oval box is made of maple with pine being used for the top and bottom. It has three "fingers" or "lappers" in the joinery and these fingers are fastened with copper tacks. It is in first paint . . . a nice, dry bittersweet color and the condition of the box is excellent.
It measures 6" long x 4-1/2" wide x 2-1/2" high.
