Bell Shaped Redware Jug
Presented here a mid 19th Century bell-shaped Redware Jug, a shape not commonly encountered . . . In fact I have never seen another like it.  It stands 8-1/2" tall and is most probably from Gonic, New Hampshire.  It has that wonderful greenish brown glaze that is heavier olive green on the shoulder and the characteristic mottled effects that were produced by dipping the fingers in a dark colored glaze and dabbing it over the clear glaze . . . in this case producing the orange splotched effect.  Lovely!  It does have a line on one side that goes into the bottom.  It is barely noticeable though because of the mottled effect of the glaze.  Redware, by it's very nature due to the low firing temperature is rarely found in perfect condition and the rarity of the shape of this jug certainly makes it a worthwhile addition to any collection.  Size is 8-1/2" high and 6-1/2" in diameter at the bottom.
