Shaker Basket
Presented here, a Four Sectioned Shaker Basket from the Mount Lebanon Community, circa 1910-20.  As opposed to the oval boxes which were somewhat standardized in shape and size, Shaker baskets were made in an almost infinate variety of weaves, shapes, and sizes according to their intended use.  The one thing consistant, however is the attention to detail and the high quality of the finished product.

This particular 4 section basket shows the skill of the basketmaker.  The beautifully carved wooden handle has been split just below the rim on each side, and each half goes down each of the four sections to provide stability and support.  The "D" shaped rim (on the outside) is double wrapped and reinforced on the inside.  A twisted rope of grass is inserted between the two sections of the rim as a decorative element.  The overall condition of the basket is very fine with only a few minor breaks that seem insignificant when looking at the whole. It retains it's old varnish finish and is a lovely light tan color.  The basket itself is 8-1/2" high and 9-3/4" wide with each section being @ 4-1/2" square.
