Family Group Silhouette
Groups of silhouettes forming a single setting are quite rare today.  Most of them seem to remain in private and institutional collections.  This particular one is fresh to the market out of a private collection.

Our silhouette artist here has achieved a relaxed family situation with which many of us can identify.  Bronzed details have been added to the silhouettes to enhance the forms and give us a better idea of the clothing and hair styles.  The grouping of several figures makes the emphasizing of a likeness in any one of the figures more noticeable . . . the differences existing between individuals, whether in height, gesture, and attitude being a great advantage to the artist in giving point to the likeness.  What our artist has achieved is to give each of the figures a personality.  He has even included the family cat.

The interior background scene is hand painted in water color and is one of Victorian opulence.  It is evident that this was a family of means.  The background is soft and does not detract from the silhouette forms.  The silhouettes are of the cut and paste type and we would date this circa 1830's. In excellent condition, the dimensions are 9-1/2" x 12" (sight) and 13-1/2" x 16" overall, including the period mahogany frame.
