Bird Carving - Enoch Benner, Port Clyde, Maine

Presented here, a very fine Cedar Waxwing bird carving by Enoch Benner of Port Clyde, Maine, c. 1900.  Benner was a well known carver from Port Clyde which is one of the settlements that comprise St. George in Knox County.  He was born in 1834 and died in 1904. He is listed in the 1880 Census as a fisherman.

This is a wonderful carving of a bird perched on a real tree branch which is mounted on a wooden disc. The entire piece is 9-1/4" tall with the bird itself being just over 7 inches long.  The carving is in excellent condition and sports a wonderful patina. This, from an important grouping of over 30 Carved and Painted Folk Art Birds which included Owls, Songbirds and Seafowl recently disbursed at auction in the Spring of this year.
