 Figured Maple Wall Box

Presented here, a drop dead gorgeous Figured Maple Wall Box, most likely used as a Candle Box.  The front and back are Maple and the sides and bottom are pine. The front facade is chamfered, the sides are angled and the back is stepped and angled in a most pleasing design not heretofore seen on a candlebox of this period. Fastened with both round and square nails, the box dates to the 1850-60 time frame.

Most certainly an original design . . . the inspiration of a very talented woodworker who has elevated this utilitarian item to Folk Art through his careful attention to detail. A very special piece, the box measures 13-5/8" wide by 7-1/2" tall on the highest part of the backboard.  It is 5-1/2" deep and the wood used is an astounding 5/8"- 3/4" thick!  It's condition is superb, original and untouched, with excellent signs of wear to the top hang hole.   It appears that at one time a thin coat of shellac had been applied but that has mostly "gone away", leaving a nice aged dry surface patina.
