Yarn Hooked Table Mat

Presented here, a very fine Yarn Hooked Table Mat, circa 1880's and possible earlier. This "Waldoboro" Type Rug takes it's name from the town of Waldoboro, Maine where this style of rug was originally developed.

The technique is distinguished by a deep pile that is sculpted so that the various elements of the design stand out from the background in bas-relief. Made of home dyed "crinkley" wool yarns in an original pattern, this mat has a much softer look in person. The camera had a difficult time catching the subtle shading of the yarns. The white especially, is not that white but more of an ivory color and the background is more of a charcoal brown.
Size is 37" wide x 44" long. Overall condition is very good with only some minor loss to the yarn on the edges. If mounted on a frame this would all "go away".
