 Paint Decorated Trinket Box

Presented here, a special little 18th Century box with Windsor Green Painted decoration that may well have served as an informal dressing box to accommodate personal items for personal adornment, or "Trinkets". The absence of a lock minimizes the likelihood of valuable contents but rather a convenient storage place to hold chains, beads, buckles, ribbons and other small oddments of everyday attire.  The majority of nineteenth century trinket boxes were usually decorated by young ladies for their own use.

The box is 7-1/4" long x 4-1/2"wide x 3-3/8" high.  It is of dovetailed and pegged construction and retains its original snipe hinges. It is painted on three sides and top and the initials L.B.B. are stenciled on the bottom . . . presumably those of the owner.  The trees painted on the sides have a "Rufus Porter" feel to them and are quite lovely, lending a delicate contrast to the more bold paint decoration on the top and front. The condition is excellent!
