Folky 19th Century Hooked Rug with Lion and Bird

Presented here is a wonderfully Folky Hooked Rug of a Lion and a Bird. Like other Folk Artists, early rug makers created rug designs based on their houses, farm animals and favorite landscapes. As a result, these rugs attained a certain naivete` not found in the "kit" rugs made from pre-stenciled patterns.  While the lion is definitely not the family pet, I feel that the rugmaker drew inspiration from Hick's Peaceable Kingdom.  This is certainly no ordinary Lion!

The rug is quite large. It measures 53" by 29" and is mounted on a stretcher and ready to hang.  The condition is excellent and the colors bright.
