RARE Santo Domingo "spiny alligator" clamshell overlaid in mosaic. This was a necklace typically used in ceremonies. Two like ones dated at 600 AD-900 AD are in museum collections. The blue pieces inlaid are glass, because it was inlaid before turquoise was readily available in the Southwest (late 1800's). The piece in the center is silver and the strands are composed of turquoise and a black stone type substance. This necklace is composed of two pieces which can be worn together or separately. These two piece necklaces generally date after 1900.
