Wonderful, very early 18th Century Pantry/ Storage Box. Top and bottom are pine, sides are maple, fastened with hand-cut Iron Tacks ( the tip of one is visible on the lid and the bottom.) The box is 10-1/2" in diameter and is of quite heavy construction. It retains a faint aroma, though I can't pinpoi nt what it is. Over centuries of usage the paint has oxidized to an almost black color, but with the depth of what used to be. This is not a box made on a mold like so many of the later ones are. This box is definitely hand made and beautifully made. The high points on the lid and the fingers show the wonderfully polished surface of a well- used and well-loved item . . . mellowed to a soft patina that only age and the years of handling can bring. They simply glow and begged to be touched. Admittedly, it does have some in-use wear, some bits of loss, even some build up of years of grime, but it is as it is and it is honest and forthright and worthy to be appreciated for many more years. In untouched original condition. A survivor who tells its story beautifully. $2400.00 R24G100511 |
