Early 19th Century Oval Box in Blue Paint

Oval lidded box in Slate Blue Paint. Forged nail construction. Top and Bottom are pine and sides are maple. The nail are placed very close together along the seams which would prevent any buckling. There are several early repairs to the lid and the bottom to fill the space caused by the shrinkage in the wood. The box, however remains sound and displays beautifully. The box is very clean inside but does have a faint aroma which would preclude its' useas a storage box for linens or sundry items. Most likely it was used for the storage of dried herbs as sugar or grains would make for a very heavy box and not easy to lift. New England, early to mid 19th century. H 8-5/8 in. L 16-3/8 in. W 14 in.
