Lucy McIntosh, Brimfield, Hampden, Massachusetts, 1821

This stunning New England schoolgirl sampler not only features the most dazzling floral cartouche imaginable, but also an elaborate border with leaf and flower detail . . . including charming embellishments in each corner.

The sampler worked by 7 year old Lucy McIntosh in 1821 contains a plethora of impressive flowers surrounding her name. Composed of bold, solidly stitched roses, a profusion of rosettes and delicate pinwheel flowers with light green lustrous silk foliage, it is impressive indeed. In addition, Lucy included three alphabets and a numerical progression in her work.

Lucy was born in 1814 in Brimfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts to James and Louisa McIntosh and died on April 21, 1826 at the age of 12 years. She has left this sampler which has been passed down in the family as a testament to her all-too-short life. The entire eye catching presentation is the quintessence of New England schoolgirl needlework. Condition is excellent . . . the colors having mellowed to give the piece a lovely softness. It has been conservation mounted back into its original frame and is protected with TruVue glass. Sight Size is 16" high x 21" long
