Oval Green Painted Pantry Box
I Whiton

Green Oval Pantry Box . . . The top and bottom are white pine, the opposing laps are maple, fastened with four wooden pegs and four iron tacks. The top fits snugly and is signed I. Whiton. The apple green paint originally applied has now oxidized to a darker color which is lovely in itself.  In this case, dirt does define patina.  It appears Mr. Whiton had a bit of a problem getting the lid to fit the box as noticed by the whittling and chiseling done to get the correct fit.  What this tells us is that most likely this is an early box . . . one not made in a mold or the lid would have fit correctly in the first place. Necessity being the mother of invention, Whiton "made it work" and box turned out exactly as it should have . .  and it "works". . .  perhaps without the refinement we find in the noted Shaker and Hersey pieces, but a testament to an individual's tenacity.
I just love the human-ness of this box.  It brings a smile to my face every time I look at it. Thank you, Mr. Whiton.
