Early PA Watercolor Fraktur, dated 1820, Kerbach Family, recording Birth and Baptism

It is interesting to note that the interest in Fraktur today is primarily in the decorative elements that surround their text.  To most viewers of Fraktur, the text, usually in German, is incidental, and yet to its creators the text was central and the decoration was meant only to further enhance the written message. The first intent of the scrivener was to thank or honor God, who was the inspiration, whether the work was to record a birth, to copy a hymn, or segment of scripture as a gift or teaching tool, or simply to show the image of one of God's creatures.

Presented here is a wonderful hand drawn and hand-colored Fraktur that was once in the collection of Joe Kindig II, well known and respected Collector/Dealer in the York, PA area.  It is a Birth and Baptismal Record, hand drawn and colored on laid paper from the period.  All done in free hand with vivid colors and in a fine state of condition!  The overall condition is very strong, though it does have a fold line and some foxing and light staining at the top that comes with age.  This fine piece of Americana records the birth and baptism of a child born to George and Anna Kerbach on November 16th 1820.  It contains Tulips and Hearts as well as Hex Signs.  There are two very rare colors on this . . . one is the Salmon in the Tulips and Hex signs and the other is the use of light and dark blues, rarely seen on Frakturs.  The colors are still very vibrant on this wonderful Folk Art example oozing with a charming naivet not found on more formal pieces.  A great fraktur watercolor drawing for the serious Americana collector or dealer... It is framed in a wonderful old Tiger Maple frame, quite probably original to the piece.
Size is 15-1/2" x 13" high, without the frame.
