Folk Art Painted Pantry Box

Presented here, a great little painted pantry box with a super patina. This is a very finely made little box with opposing single finger lapped construction. It is fastened with copper tacks and wooden pegs. The box is pegged in four places on the lid and also on the base and is really more rectangular than oval. For those reasons and others, I believe it could safely be given a "Hersey" attribution. It's so beautifully constructed, it almost has a "Shaker like" quality to it.

The color is a warm "nutty" brown and the charming painting on the lid reminds one of the type found on American painted tin pieces. The stylistic flowers look to me like maybe rosebuds or perhaps tulips. Buyer's choice! The condition is fabulous with the exception of a small split in the lid that runs from the inside edge about one inch. It is in the area about 9 o'clock in the top photo. It does not go through to the inside. The size of the box is a mere 4-1/8" long x 3-3/8" wide x 1-5/8" high. Perfect for the top of the stack where the painting can be seen, or just a great little stand alone piece. The initials ATF are scratched into the inside of the lid along with the date 1867. A real treasure!
