Flowing Blue Spatter Pitcher
In this subset of Spatterware, "the spattering takes place first, then the flowing comes afterward as the heat of the kiln dissolves some of the dots of the applied pigment" as explained by Robacker in Spatterware and Sponge. They devote an entire chapter to this ware with many examples pictured. None, however, even come close to the beauty that is this Pitcher. With it's relief-molded rim, elongated, oval shape and glassy glaze it is a very special piece. Big, bold and gutsy are words that aptly describe this pitcher.

This ware is also called Blue Rockingham as it resembles the Brown Rockingham glazes manufactured by nearly every pottery here and abroad. Blue Rockingham, however, is strictly an American invention and a very attractive addition to the Spatterware family. Dating to the mid 19th Century, it is in absolutely high outstanding condition with no apologies whatsoever. Size is 9-1/3" long s 4-3/4" wide x 8-1/4" high. If you love blue and white you will love this Pitcher!
