Flowing Blue Spatter Oval Baker
In this subset of Spatterware, "the spattering takes place first, then the flowing comes afterward as the heat of the kiln dissolves some of the dots of the applied pigment" as explained by Robacker in Spatterware and Sponge. They devote an entire chapter to this ware with many examples pictured. In this example both effects are very evident. On the sides, the flowing is very evident with the spot dot effect minimal, while on the bottom the spots are very much there. It is this combination that makes this bowl interesting.

The size of this Oval Baker or Serving Bowl is an impressive 12" long x 8-1/2" wide and 2-1/2" high. The condition is very fine with the only thing needing to be mentioned being a "kiln kiss" or "boo boo in the blue" that happened in the making and is on the underside of the rim. Other than that, the piece is fine.
