Watercolor Portrait of a Woman

Presented here, an exceptional Folk Art Watercolor Portrait of a Woman wearing a Lace Bonnet with Blue Ribbons. Typical of the dress of the day, this miniature dates to the 1830 s. It is presented in it's original early 19th C birds' eye maple frame with a lemon gold liner. It measures 4" high x 3-1/2" wide, (sight size), and the outside dimensions are 6.5" x 5-3/4".

The merest glance tells us that this little portrait was painted by an artist of considerable talent. The keen attention to the smallest detail is seen in the translucency of the fabric of the dress and especially in the lace bonnet that is woven through with blue ribbons. While the subject appears at first to be quite serious, when you look closer you can see the slightest bit of a smile at the corners of her mouth. While the identity of the woman is unknown, examination out of the frame shows that the artist has signed the portrait on the back . . . Painted by Joseph Mosby, 1838.

I had a very difficult time getting a good photo likeness of the portrait.  While her features are quite angular, she is really a quite attractive woman.  Her hair is also a much lighter shade of brown with blonde highlights.
