Fine needlework, excellent composition, and a strong influence of Quaker instruction characterize this sampler by Catherine Larason who states that she was Catherine Larason, Kingwood, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, c. 1830's

"Born July 21, 1822". Despite her obvious, overall skill with her needle, Catharine still managed to give us a little ill planned whimsy as she had to crush the day and date of her birth on the line above (I love that.) Below her name is a classic Quaker "W" basket, and farther below a very serene deer reclines on a hillock with other animals and paired birds. Paired hearts create additional interest to the left.

Catharine was born in a large Quaker enclave, the village of Kingwood, in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. Her father was John Lambert Larason and her mother Sarah Dean, who were married Jan 9,1819 in Hunterdon County. Catherine married Ambrose Barcroft, a farmer, on November 9, 1844 and they had one child, Sarah. The sampler came from a family descendant in Los Angeles of the Larason (Larison)-Dean family.

Worked in silk on linen the sampler is in excellent condition and framed in a deep molded antique walnut frame with gold fillet in excellent condition! The whole presentation is quite appealing. It is conserved on acid free and ready to hang.
Sight Size is 17-1/2 x 16".
