Carved Fist Cane Presented here a carved fist cane grasping an ivory shaft with a sphere at each end. Carved from one piece of wood, the mahogany shaft terminates in an ivory tip that is 1" long. The overall length is 35-1/2". This cane could reasonably be considered a sailor's scrimshaw piece since the ivory is made from a sperm whale's tooth and the cane hand made with no adornments. It also is a visual puzzle to determine how the shaft got into the hand with a ball at each end.
