Wrought Iron Pendant Trammel Candle/Rushnip Holder
Pendant Candleholders had methods for vertical adjustment and were designed to be freely suspended within the room from ceiling joists and other wooden beams and cross members as well as from window frames and cupboards. They are descended from the much more primitive "loom light" that originated in the textile mills of Northern Ireland and were used extensively there as well as in England and America in the 18th and 19th century.

The Pendant Trammel Candle Holder is a refinement on the Loom Light and was most certainly designed for domestic purposes. In addition to the candle holder which is another refinement over simply a socket candle holder, this device can also accomodate the burning of a rushlight. The rushlight holder as well as the sophistocated saucer-type candleholder is a rare combination. In addition, most trammel Candle Holders one sees have a more heavy appearance whereas there is delicacy and style in this one. Surely it had it's working life in a very fine home with gracious appointments.

The Trammel allows the light to be adjusted from 34" to 49" and, because of the way the trammel is fitted to the fixed vertical shaft, the candleholder can rotate a full 360 degrees! This piece is truly a magnificent example of the art of the blacksmith and is the finest example we have had the pleasure to present. It is truly folk art where a utilitarian object is raised to another level due to the artistry of the maker. Provenance is ex: Glenn and Wilma Tripp Estate Trust which was disbursed at auction in 2001, then to another collection of early lighting and now to you, fresh to the market.
